Your family may be receiving $420 in food benefits from the Pandemic Electronic Benefits Transfer (P-EBT) program, a new program to help fill the school meals gap for children who lost access to free or reduced-price school meals due to COVID-19 school closures.

This communication is to inform you of the Pandemic Electronic Benefits Transfer (P-EBT) offered by No Kid Hungry New York and Hunger Solutions New York, a crisis response program for children, ages 5-18, in schools who receive free or reduced meals at school, and all students in Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) schools that offer free meals to all.

Families that receive free or reduced meals at school and families that have students in Chambers, Edson, JFK, GW, Bailey, and Miller are eligible to receive the Pandemic-EBT. The program will be distributing $420 to each eligible student during July and August. This benefit will be issued automatically and there is no need to apply.

Listed below are a few quick facts from No Kid Hungry New York:

  • P-EBT will provide benefits to around 2.1 million children across New York who have lost access to free or reduced-price meals due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Benefits will be issued automatically – families do not need to apply. Families will receive benefits on a staggered schedule between May and August.
  • Families will receive $420 per eligible child as part of their P-EBT benefits. This dollar amount is equivalent to the USDA reimbursement for school breakfast and lunch over the period that school buildings have been closed.
  • P-EBT will not impact immigration status or public charge determinations.
  • P-EBT benefits can be spent on food purchases at retailers like grocery stores and farmers markets.
  • P-EBT is not SNAP, and does not replace other nutrition programs. You can use other programs, like summer meals, SNAP, and WIC, while using P-EBT. You can still get “grab and go” or delivered meals from your school.

Your family may have already received this benefit or may see something in the mail before the end of August. Please be aware that this benefit is coming from a trusted source and there is nothing your family needs to do to apply.

If you do not receive a P-EBT card and/or benefit by mid-August, call NYSOTDA at 1-833-452-0096.
