GSK Visits Miller Middle School

GSK (GlaxoSmithKline) staff members visited M. C. Miller Middle School over the last few weeks of May to give students a lesson on supply and demand, and supply chains. GSK is a global leader in consumer healthcare products, well-known for goods such as Sensodyne, Aquafresh, Excedrin, Theraflu, and Tums.

Bethany Barry, Isomar Ramos, and Stephan Hill discussed the different toothpaste products GSK makes at their Oak Hill, NY, location. Topics included ingredient purchasing, factory costs, salary costs, packaging, quality control, and sales. Students also viewed a brief video showing the GSK production line that produces billions of toothpaste products each year.

To sum up what they learned, students teamed up to create their own quality product for their “consumers”. Each team produced paper airplanes to the correct specifications of the consumer, then flew each plane to reach a certain area in the front of the classroom. The team with the most quality airplanes that crossed the finish line, won.

Thank you to GSK for a great lesson and a really fun activity!
