Kingston City School District students at all levels participated in the “Hour of Code” supporting a worldwide Computer Science movement with a goal to teach young and old that computer science is fun, creative and accessible to all students regardless of background. The one-hour introductory lesson was designed to teach the basics of coding and expand participation in the field of computer science. Students not only learn the basics, but also foster problem-solving skills, logic, creativity, task completion, and possibly spark an interest in a future career path.
Each Elementary School, Middle School and the Kingston High School incorporated the Hour of Code in certain classes and computer labs during Computer Science Education Week, December 3 – 9, 2018, which is held annually as homage to Admiral Grace Murray Hopper, a pioneer of computer programming. Some lessons did continue into the following week and students will have access to the coding programs through their online Clever accounts to continue practicing and advancing their CS skills.
