Please join us on Wednesday, June 30th at 6:00pm in the Edson Library to meet the candidate for School Principal!
Kathleen Lowell is a long-time educator who has taught in dual-language classrooms and has experience as a bilingual administrator. She has worked in local school districts, including Mahopac, Arlington, and Southern Westchester BOCES.
Her educational leadership experiences include kindergarten and elementary principal roles, curriculum director, and for the last 6 years, as the assistant director and resource specialist with the Hudson Valley Regional Bilingual Education Resource Network.
Ms. Lowell is “excited about the possibility of leading a school with a culturally- and linguistically-diverse student population, such as that of Edson.”
All families of Edson Elementary School are invited to meet Ms. Lowell and ask questions that are important to you and the education of your students.
This event will be livestreamed to the KCSD YouTube page for those who cannot attend in-person, however, the livestream will not be interactive. Questions and comments can only be taken at the in-person event.
We hope you can join us!
Attention Parents…Principal’s Message, June 24th, 2021
Attention 100% remotes learners- district chrome books and power cord must be returned to Edson Elementary by Friday, June 25th, at 3:30PM. Chrome books can be dropped off between 12:00-3:30PM today, and Friday between 8:00AM and 3:30PM.
Take time this summer to enjoy the beautiful outdoor spaces that surround us. There are wonderful hiking trails along the Hudson River (Black Creek, Mills Mansion, Poet’s Walk) that are close by and free to use and will bring excitement to the long days of summer. For more details, check out websites such as Scenic Hudson or New York State Parks. There are also several bike trails that are newly built such as the trail through New Paltz and Highland and one in the city of Kingston.
Check out local museums which are a real treasure such as the Maritime Museum, Senate House, Hurley Museum, Children’s Museum in Poughkeepsie, and the New York State Museum in Albany, which is free.
Please encourage your child to read every day. It should be pleasure reading so they enjoy doing it!
Please take time to talk to your child about summer safety- wearing a helmet while biking, using crosswalks, swimming where there is a lifeguard, wearing sunscreen and sunglasses to protect from UV rays, and knowing what poison ivy and poison oak look like.
At this time, if your child is attending one or both of the Kingston City School District summer camp sessions, they should have been registered using the link that the district has sent out and has been on the district website. The first day for Session 1 is Tuesday, July 6th. Details about the summer program such as the menu, bus stops, etc… will be posted on the district website next week.
Teacher assignments for incoming kindergarten students and a welcome letter will be mailed home in early August. We are also planning a 2021-2022 Kindergarten Transition Program for August 25th and 26th here at Edson. More details will be shared via mail and district website posts in July.
It has been a pleasure working with your children this school year. They bring joy to our lives and never cease to amaze me, especially watching the children grow and mature this year!
Best wishes for an exciting and memorable summer!

Harry L. Edson Principal’s Message:
May 14th, 2021
I was approved by the Board of Education to retire after this school year. This is my 36th year as a teacher and administrator, and I have served as an elementary principal in Kingston for the past 20 years- so it is time for me to step back and change my focus. It has been a pleasure to serve the students, staff, and parents as the Edson Principal the past 5 years. Edson is a wonderful school and community, and I am proud of all the accomplishments of our students and the hard work and dedication of the staff. This year has been challenging for everyone, and I appreciate all the support and understanding that parents have shown, and I am amazed by how adaptable and positive the children have been throughout all the craziness we have faced during the pandemic. I am particularly excited to be back in the cafeteria seeing the students every day- they always make me smile and laugh!
The district is gathering input from staff and parents regarding their future vision for our school, and the attributes they look for in a school leader. Dr. Felicello, Assistant Superintendent for Elementary, is hosting an evening meeting on Teams with Edson parents next week, Wednesday, May 19th, at 6:00PM. If you are interested in participating, you will be called into the meeting on the Edson Cougar Announcements Team at 6:00PM.
I will continue to work all summer, retiring on September 1st, so I can assist the new principal in their transition to the position, and ensure that our school is 100% ready for the return of students in the fall.
Morning Drop Off Changes Starting Wednesday Next Week (May 19th)
Starting Wednesday, May 19th, parents can drop off their children at the lower parking lot, end hallway exit door (across from the Art room), between 9:35 and 9:50AM. This will help alleviate the overcrowding in the upper level side parking lot. As a result, the recess entrance that has been designated for kindergarten will be closed to allow us to open the lower level location. Parents can select to drop off their children in any of the three locations- upper side parking lot, lower parking lot and the front driveway by the main entrance (after the buses depart).
PTO Fundraisers Reminder
Just a reminder that the Hannaford Helps fundraiser lasts through May 29th, and the online Spring Scholastic Book Fair is this week through May 23rd.
Annual Barbeque and Field Day
As we transition back to a more normal school year, we are planning a modified field day and barbeque lunch for the students. Due to COVID restrictions, the two events will be modified, integrating social distancing protocols, and we are unable to include parents as has been the practice in past years. More details will be sent home in June.
