| Twenty four 7th and 8th grade students who demonstrate the scholarship, leadership and character that typifies a member of the Junior National Honor Society were inducted into the Miller Middle School chapter of this prestigious organization in April. The school's chapter is now 50 fantastic members strong! |

The dinosaurs came to town recently, or at least to George Washington Elementary School, where youngsters fed their insatiable curiosity about extinct herbivorous and carnivorous reptiles and the ancient rock upon which they may have stood.

Kindergarten Registration for children who will be five years of age by December 1, 2008 is underway at each of the District's elementary schools. Registration is by appointment. Registration for all other grades takes place at the individual school.

| Miller Spirit Earns Shamrock Run Trophy |
| Miller Middle School was the winner of the trophy for the highest level of participation for an organization participating in the 20th Annual Shamrock Run held in March. Over one hundred students, faculty, and staff ran, jogged, or walked the two mile race that started at the Governor Clinton monument. Students who participated received Miller Middle School tee shirts courtesy of the Character Education Club -- and helped raise money for local charities. Good show! |

Read Across America Day, an event founded by the National Education Association to foster passion in lifelong readers, will take place on March 3, which coincides with famed children’s book author Dr. Seuss’s 104th birthday. Schools across the District are prepping for the special event by holding celebrations to encourage student’s love of reading.

| Bailey Student Named to State Honors Band |
| Kudos to Nathan Outwater, an eighth grade J. Watson Bailey Middle School student and tenor saxophone player, who has been named to the Statewide Middle School Honors Band by the New York State Band Directors Association, and will perform on March 8, 2008 in Syracuse, New York. Only 94 students from across the entire State were selected to perform with this prestigious group. Congratulations! |

The gallery of art on display at the Ulster BOCES Conference Center in New Paltz features the amazing work of our students from throughout the district. An opening reception for the artists was held recently, and the reaction of the guests to the witty, clever and creative portraits can accurately be described in one word: wow! You are welcome to see for yourself, and to visit the Conference Center Gallery any school day between 9:00am and 5:00pm through January 31st. |

| Montessori Program Would Offer Alternative for Elementary Students in 2008-2009 |
A belief in children underscores every aspect of the Montessori program, a new pilot proposed to begin in the Kingston City School District in the 2008-2009 school year for students ages three to five. Montessori differs from traditional education in that it views teachers as facilitators, rather than instructors. Tapping into children’s innate curiosity as a source for independent, self-directed learning, and instilling a philosophy of lifetime learning are at the core of the program.

| A History Lesson Comes to Life for Crosby Students |
Local artist Joel Iskowitz had the distinct honor of designing the James Madison Presidential $1.00 coin, the fourth in a new series of commemorative coins introduced this year by the US Mint. His visit with Congressman Maurice Hinchey to the ER Crosby School brought home a vivid lesson in art and history for these young students.

| Hero NYC Cop Brings Story of Forgiveness to Bailey Middle School |
After being paralyzed for life by three bullets in 1986, New York City Police Department Detective Steven D. McDonald has been inspiring audiences with his compelling testimony of the power of forgiveness. Students at J. Watson Bailey Middle School were treated to a special lesson in Character Education when Detective McDonald visited the school. McDonald was a young officer on patrol 21 years ago. He was promoted to Detective 1st Rank - the highest possibile - in recognition of his courage.

The Kingston City School District is forming a Master Plan Facilities Committee to review and plan for district facility needs. This committee will be comprised of representatives from several groups including teachers, administrators, business people, and local community members.

| Sophie Finn Kindergarten Visits Forsyth Nature Center |
Kindergarten students at Sophie Finn Elementary School were “wowed” by the Forsyth Nature Center during a recent field trip, where students were able to pet bunnies, identify bird calls, observe koi fish and interact with many other animals like llamas and sheep. Respect for all living creatures was one of the values instilled by the trip, as Forsyth Nature Center educator Julie Noble read students the book, Hey Little Ant, a story that puts children into an “ant-like” perspective. The trip also applied directly to the New York State Learning Standards, which are a focus in the kindergarten classroom, especially the life functions of plants and animals. |
| Forsyth Nature Center Visits Robert Graves |
Students at Robert Graves Elementary School had a lesson in science and Character Education during an assembly presented by Steve and Julie Noble of the Forsyth Nature Center. The environmental educators presented a series of lessons to each class including Bird Bash, Turtle Talk, and Mammal Mania about how different animals prepare for the change in seasons. They also showcased a special rabbit, “Thumper,” that was rescued from box of baby bunnies that was left on the side of the road. |

Robert Graves Elementary School students are saving the District money, helping the environment, eating healthfully, and engaging in hands-on learning — all through their successful “Worm Recycling” project.

| Mr. Voerg Recognized for Excellence |
The annual Mid-Hudson School Study Council (MHSSC) Awards for Excellence in Education recently recognized Edward R. Crosby Elementary School Principal John Voerg for his outstanding performance as an administrator.
Mr. Voerg, has served as a leader in Kingston City School District for the past six years. Since July 2005, he has worked as building principal of the Edward R. Crosby Elementary School, where students, staff, and teachers say he has helped to make Crosby a wonderful place to learn, work, and grow.

| Seniors and Students Bond at Crosby School Concert |
Edward R. Crosby Elementary School students were enthusiastic participants in a concert and sing-along showcasing the vocal talents of residents of Ten Broeck Commons, a long-term healthcare facility located in Lake Katrine. The choir sang classic favorites like “New York New York” and “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” to an eager audience of students in Grades K-2, with students joining in for several choruses.

Fire Prevention Week Heats Up

Fire Prevention Week was a smoking hot success at all 11 District Elementary schools, as students learned and reviewed the important rules of fire safety. An annual tradition, Fire Prevention Week helps unite schools with their community. Schools host local fire companies and rescue services, who then work to educate students about the dangers of fire, and emergency safety skills. In many cases, the volunteers are visitors to the same Elementary Schools they attended as a child. >> Read more |
| Crosby First Grade Visits Hodgson’s Working Farm |
First grade students at Edward R. Crosby Elementary School were able to see where the food they eat everyday comes from when they took a field trip to Hodgson’s Farm and Market in Montgomery.
Before the trip, students learned about the life cycle of plants, how a farm operates, and farm vocabulary. That knowledge was brought to life as students participated in a hay ride tour of the farm’s corn fields, enjoyed a petting zoo, and picked their own pumpkins. First grade teachers Jessica Sunshine, Roslie Gilpatric, and Ellen Venditti integrated English language arts into the trip as they read stories about farms and later completed a process writing activity about their experience, including a brainstorming session about the many uses of pumpkins. “The students had a great hands-on experience with the farm animals,” comments Mrs. Sunshine. |
| Zena School Community Appreciates Bus Drivers During National School Bus Safety Week |
School children travel hundreds of miles each academic year on the big yellow buses under the constant care and attention of their bus drivers. Recently, during National School Bus Safety Week, the parents, teachers, and students at Zena Elementary School took some time to show their gratitude to the drivers by hosting a Parent Teacher Association (PTA)-sponsored Bus Driver Appreciation Day breakfast.

| The RGS Reviewer is off to a Great Start! |
Fourth and fifth graders at Robert Graves Elementary School were treated to an inside look into the world of media and publishing during an after-school presentation by Ulster BOCES Community Relations specialist Kate Heidecker. Ms. Heidecker, a former education reporter for the Daily Freeman, helped educate students about the world of journalism during a question-and-answer session designed to assist the group of 40 students kick off the year of publishing a monthly Robert Graves newspaper the RGS Reviewer.

| National Merit Program Names Nine KHS Students |
Four seniors were named as semifinalists in this year's National Merit Scholarship Program. Seniors James Davis, Russell Davis, Elizabeth Goldhammer, and Linda Wang have been recognized by the College Board for their academic performance in the Preliminary SAT, taken in their junior year. Five students were named Commended Students and one was named an Outstanding Participant by the National Achievement Scholarship Program.

Sophie Finn Students Receive Recognition from Former Vice President Al Gore |
History, political science, biology, geography, art, music – a year long exploration of the Hudson River that extended to nearly every area of the school curriculum for Donna Nageli’s fourth grade classroom at Sophie Finn Elementary School culminated in a congratulatory letter from former Vice President Al Gore when students returned to school in September.

| John Voerg, principal of Crosby Elementary School and Valerie Hannum, principal of Robert Graves Elementary School are being honored for their dedication to education.
Mr. Voerg is the recipient of the Award for Excellence in Administration from the Mid-Hudson School Study Council for his service to children and community. Ms. Hannum is a recipient of the YWCA of Ulster County Tribute to Women Award in recognition for her significant contributions to improving the quality of life in our community. Congatulations to both! |
| KHS Bridge Program is a Student’s Path to Success |
The leap from middle school student to freshman at the Kingston High School campus can be overwhelming and intimidating for some. In order to ease the transition, more than 70 incoming freshman attended the District’s fifth annual three-day Summer Bridge program. Coordinated by KHS guidance counselors Lindsay Hartman and Errin Parese, the students were selected by Middle School administrators based on academic and social need.

Friday, September 28th is a half day of school for students. Middle and high school students will dismiss at 10:15am, and elementary students will dismiss at 11:15am. No lunch is served. Staff will engage in professional development workshops to enhance teaching and learning.
Thu 11/1
The annual test of the Early Dismissal component of the District's Emergency Management Plan takes place Thursday, November 1st. Students will be released 15 minutes earlier than their regularly scheduled time. There will be no after-school activities or athletic practices on this day.
Parents should plan for the early arrival of their youngsters on both of these days. |
| Grant Gives Edson Students a "Trip" on the Half Moon |

The Hudson River Maritime Museum and Kingston City School District have received a Teaching the Hudson Valley grant that will enable Edson third graders to participate in a yearlong study of Native Americans and the explorers aboard the Half Moon when contact with Europeans was made in 1609.
