Coffee & Conversation

Board of Education Coffee & Conversation
Summaries of the Conversations

Fall 2008

District administration recently welcomed a group of parents and community members for a special Coffee and Conversation, where interested individuals had the opportunity to discuss educational issues with Superintendent Gerard Gretzinger and his administrative team.

Parents expressed interest in getting involved with their children’s schools, and made contact with members of the Districtwide Parents Council, who were also in attendance at the meeting. The varying class sizes in different Elementary Schools was also discussed, along with the opportunities for the District to procure grants for enrichment activities. Parents were delighted to learn the District had recently hired a new grant writer that will allow Kingston City Schools to become eligible for millions of dollars of grant money!

Middle level education was on the minds of many parents who attended the meeting. The school-within-a-school concept that is in effect in both J. Watson Bailey and M. Clifford Miller Middle Schools is one way the District is working to keep sixth through eighth grade students engaged and focused. Students are assigned to the same group of teachers for core subject areas, keeping the same group of students together throughout the year. This makes the transition to middle school easier for many students, and helps to create a sense of community.

At another recent Coffee & Conversation hosted by Board of Education President David Fletcher and Trustee Maureen Bowers, parents discussed School District boundaries, and learned about New York State education law regarding School District transportation. Parents also asked questions, and become informed about snow policy removal procedures in light of the upcoming winter season.

The next coffee and conversation will be held on Monday, December 15 at 9 AM at Hudson Coffee Traders, 288 Wall Street in Uptown Kingston. Please join us!
