Closing & Delayed Opening of School

Information about school closings and delays is posted on the homepage of the District website. You can also sign-up to receive E-mail notification by filling out the form below. If you have E-Mail at home and at work, we suggest you sign-up twice, with both addresses.

School closing procedures for the Kingston City School District in the event of inclement weather or other emergencies will be announced on the following stations:

  • WDST
  • WPDH/WCZX
  • WRGB TV/
  • WTEN TV
  • WKNY
  • WRNN-TV
  • WGHQ/WRWD
  • WCTW/WHUC

Delayed Opening
A decision to postpone the opening of school for two hours rather than closing school altogether will be made in consideration of highway maintenance operations, which might require additional time to plow and sand/salt roadways; to allow morning commuter traffic to clear from the roadways; or when weather conditions are predicted to improve during the morning hours.

Early Dismissal
Times of early dismissals prompted by severe weather or other emergencies that develop later in the day must accommodate the schedules of all public, parochial, and private schools served by the district's transportation department. Parents are urged to make advance plans for their children's care in the event of an early school closing. Early closing announcements will be made as soon in the day as practical. After school and evening activities may also be cancelled as conditions change during the day. As a general rule with rare exceptions, all athletic events and field trips are canceled when school is canceled.

Weather conditions can vary significantly within the district, which includes 210 square miles from its urban center in Kingston to its more rural areas of Rifton, Zena and Tillson. On any given winter's day when roads in Kingston and the surrounding suburban areas are in good condition, they might be quite different in the district's rural reaches. If roads in one or more area of the school district are unsafe and conditions are not expected to improve by mid-morning, all schools in the district will be closed.

Snow Return Days
2009-2010

The district plans for six snow days during the school year.  If some or all of these days are not used, they are returned as days off in the following order:

May 28, May 27, April 5, April 6, April 7, May 26

Due to bad weather in some years the district has been forced to use more that the seven allotted snow days.  Should this occur, the days will be made up using the following currently scheduled vacation days:

  • March 29, 2010
  • March 30, 2010
