A celebration of diversity reigned throughout Meagher Elementary School recently, when students in Grades K-5 took the time to apply knowledge honed in the classroom by embracing the traditions of different cultures. Students throughout the school spent the month of December learning about diversity through studying places like Mexico, Germany, Jamaica, and Italy.
In kindergarten, students enjoyed a traditional Chanuka treat of latkes with applesauce as part of the school-wide celebration.
Students in second and third grade show conducted a month-long school supply drive to collect items like pencils, paper, and crayons for those affected by Hurricane Noel in the Dominican Republic.
The October 2007 storm left over 62,000 resident homeless, and destroyed many schools and businesses. “In addition to learning Spanish and some of the cultural traditions of the Dominican Republic, students learned about how fortunate they are because many Dominicans were living in poverty even before the storm hit,” said second and third grade teacher KyLynne Batista. |
