Bailey Students Learn Valuable Lessons on Character Education and the Gift of Giving

J. Watson Bailey Middle School students have been very busy the past few months practicing their Character Education traits and working on various community service projects.

During the month of December, the Board Games Club, under the direction of Mr. Augustine, conducted a toy and gift collection for the Darmstadt Homeless Shelter, needy families of Bailey students, and Family of Woodstock. The goal was to collect gifts for students in need between the ages of 12 and 18. Mrs. DiBella assisted with the distribution of the donated items.

In November, the School community focused on the Character Education trait of "kindness" -- an integral part of the school motto and an everyday focus. The Helping Hands Club (HHC) has been hard at work spearheading several month-long projects. Past activities include the pink ribbon sale where HHC members made and sold pink ribbons to raise money for the Greenspan Center at Kingston Hospital; Clay Hands (student-made clay ornaments that were sold at Bailey Plaza), which raised money for various events throughout the year; and Turkey Feathers (paper turkey feathers made by the students and then sold to raise money for the Bailey annual Food Drive).

During October, the Bailey School community (faculty, staff, and students) wrote "wishes for the world" and planted each wish with a daffodil bulb on campus for the United Nations (UN) Day of World Peace, a day commemorating the opening of the UN 61 years ago. A Character Education assembly was also held that focused on the traits of Respect, Responsibility, Effort, and Kindness. Come spring, an exciting and colorful garden of daffodils will hopefully pop up on the campus!
